The main reason why mobile phones have not taken off as devices to be used for gambling is that the technology has not been in place to cater for the sector until recently.
This is the "speculative" claim of EGaming Review editor Jake Pollard, who said that it is only over the past year where handsets such as the iPhone and the Blackberry have come out that are capable of harnessing broadband.
Connectivity problems and a lack of "convenience" have also contributed to the slow uptake of mobile gambling, he claimed.
"If you're on the train and get cut off or lose connection for whatever reason
that's not going to make you inclined to repeat the experience," Mr Pollard added.
The UK has the largest market for mobile betting, accounting for almost 52 per cent of all bets placed in the sector, according to the Juniper Research report Betting on a Mobile Future.
