The rollout of broadband internet connections around the world is helping the online gaming industry to do well despite the economic downturn, it has been claimed.
Warwick Bartlett of Global Betting and Gaming Consultants said that while broadband connections are commonplace in the UK, in other countries penetration levels can be as low as 20 per cent.
However, this figure is rising and more gambling enthusiasts are getting access to internet gaming where they are looking for better deals than they can find in their local casino or bookmakers.
"It is a global business and the rollout of broadband globally is causing people to look for better value," Mr Bartlett remarked.
He added that there is "a whole market out there" of people who have previously been unable to participate in online gaming because of state-run gambling monopolies.
According to the new media review from the European Travel Commission, 66.4 per cent of UK citizens have internet access, compared to 5.3 per cent of Indians.
