Don't assume .co.uk casinos are licensed, gamblers told

2009-01-15 12:15:06

Gamblers should not assume that an internet casino is licensed by the Gambling Commission (GC) simply because it has a .co.uk domain name.

This is the warning of Julia Mackisack, the GC's director of corporate affairs, who stated that people should always read the small print before signing up to a gaming website because consumers cannot take for granted that the casino is properly regulated.

She suggested that her organisation is looking to crack down on any operators within the UK which do not have appropriate accreditation.

"The Commission is currently unaware of any unlicensed gambling websites in Great Britain but if we identified an unlicensed operator based in Great Britain we would take appropriate action," Ms Mackisack remarked.

It is the GC's mandate to regulate the UK's gaming industry, having been established in October 2005 following the implementation of the Gambling Act 2005.

The Gaming Board for Great Britain was its predecessor.
