The Gambling Commission has reported an increase in the number of people in the UK taking part in some form of remote gambling.
In its annual study, published in January, it found that 9.7 per cent of people gambled via their computer, mobile phone or digital TV on average during 2008, up from 8.8 per cent in 2007 and 7.2 per cent in 2006.
Those who played the National Lottery remotely were included in the figures.
John Travers, the Gambling Commission's corporate affairs manager, suggested that there is no real indication of what the future holds for the sector although a trend is obviously emerging.
"It's difficult to say what the next developments in the industry will be, though clearly participation in remote gambling continues to steadily grow," he remarked.
Mr Travers stated that ten years ago, remote gambling was used by less than one per cent of the population.
