Casino 'could create 700 jobs' in Leeds

2009-02-16 16:21:33

A new casino planned for the city of Leeds will create a number of much-needed jobs in the region, according to a local newspaper.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that up to 700 new jobs could be created as a result of the new facility, which could also generate up to £20 million in private-sector investments, according to experts.

"It's better that we get the casino - and those 700 jobs - than somewhere else," the newspaper stated.

Leeds was selected as one of 16 locations granted permission to construct smaller casinos in addition to government plans to construct a "supercasino" in the UK. Other casinos have been approved in Wolverhampton, Scarborough and Middlesbrough.

According to the newspaper, the planned Leeds facility will be three times larger than the average casino in the UK and an operator's licence could be granted by late 2010.
