Casinos 'impacted' by recent law changes

2009-02-23 03:43:54

Casinos in the UK have felt the impact of a number of changes to the law in recent years, according to a spokesperson for the British Casino Association.

While the smoking ban and a 2007 budgetary decision which increased the duty casinos pay on gambling-generated profit have had a negative impact on the industry in recent years, the spokesman asserted that new and regenerated casinos planned for the UK could have a positive economic benefit.

He said it is important to note that these casinos will create new jobs during their construction phases and additional opportunities will arise when the facilities are complete.

These other jobs include chefs, bar staff, front of house workers, receptionists and croupiers, among others, he said.

And while the spokesman added that the new planned casinos will have varied impact - depending on their size and location - they could provide valuable regeneration for their local economies.
