Smoking ban 'not the sole cause' of online gambling migration

2009-03-27 12:20:04

Brian Wright of the Remote Gambling Association has outlined some of the reasons why he feels a number of land-based casino punters have turned to online gaming in recent years.

He suggested that while the smoking ban and possible concerns about the use of card counting technology may have pushed some people towards the internet alternative, he believes that a lot of it could stem simply from the convenience that internet gambling offers.

"It is just part of the wider appeal of online gambling where for small stakes the majority of people can take part in a harmless leisure activity from the comfort of their own homes," he remarked.

While online gambling has grown in recent times, so has the mobile gambling market, with many experts putting its burgeoning popularity down to the increased uptake of smartphones.

Juniper Research predicted in a study published in December last year that mobile gambling revenues would more than double in 2009 to a figure in excess of $3.6 billion.
