London Hippodrome to become casino

2009-04-15 11:58:15

The London Hippodrome in Leicester Square is set to be turned into a casino.

United Leisure Gaming had its application to renovate the famous building approved this week, with a spokesperson for the local council claiming that a gaming venue would be better for locals than a nightclub.

Audrey Lewis, who represents customers and neighbours in Westminster council's cabinet, commented: "When the venue was run as a nightclub, there was a series of disturbances on the premises.

"We feel that the venue will serve people better and be safer as a casino."

Leicester Square already has one gambling venue, the Casino at the Empire, which played host to the 2008 World Series of Poker Europe event.

Last year, the famous destination also hosted Poker in the Park, Europe's largest poker festival, which lasted over a weekend in August and was attended by numerous major card sharps, including then Irish Poker Open champion Neil Channing.
