Dutch gamer claims $2,000 limit hold'em title at WSOP

2009-06-23 17:00:17

Marcus Naalden has become the second Dutch gamer in the history of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) to win a bracelet in the competition.

He took down the $2,000 (£1,225) limit hold'em tournament, outlasting more than 440 other players.

The poker star dominated play from the moment it came down to the last 25 competitors and proceeded to extend his chip lead as he edged closer to the final table.

When he sat at the featured table, his stack was larger than those of his two closest competitors combined.

By the time heads-up play began between Naalden and Steven Cowley, the Dutchman had a seven-to-one chip lead.

Cowley pulled back and within 30 minutes he had taken the lead, but Naalden rallied and soon beat his opponent after catching a queen on the flop to make a pair.

Despite picking up more than $160,000 for his WSOP win, his largest cash remains his victory in the €1,000 ($858) no limit hold'em event at the Master Classics of Poker 2007 tournament in Amsterdam.
