UK casinos contributing to £6bn revenues?

2010-01-29 11:57:39

Casinos in the UK may be contributing a slice of the £6 billion generated by the betting industry, new research has suggested.

A study by Deloitte found that the sector makes up approximately 0.5 per cent of the country's gross domestic product, as well as 0.3 per cent of total employment.

This represents close to 100,000 vacancies, with gaming establishments providing a large number of positions to relatively low qualified demographics, the organisation stated.

Simon Oaten, betting and gaming lead at Deloitte, said: "The betting industry makes a significant contribution to the British economy."

According to Mr Oaten, it is important that the government continues to balance effective regulation with an environment that allows domestic outlets to remain competitive.

Malaysia-based gaming giant Genting recently announced that it will be expanding its operations to the US, after experiencing a number of successful ventures in the UK - where it owns 40 casinos.
