Guiseppe Biancoviso has become the first winner at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) event that is taking place at Caesars Palace casino in Las Vegas.
He beat fellow European Leonid Ryadynskyy of Ukraine in heads-up play to take home $28,398 (£17,453) in prize money after a final table that he dominated from the start.
The 28-year-old electrician from Florence, Italy took on more than 400 competitors in the event that was one of the largest to have been seen on the WSOP tour so far this season.
He now sits atop the leaderboard for qualification to the WSOP Regional Championships with 50 points, although the tournament still has nine more gold ring events to conclude.
Elsewhere, Vanessa Selbst was able to successfully defend her title in the recent North American Poker Tour Mohegan Sun main event in Uncasville, poker Listings reported.
Ms Selbst said: "To be able to defend the title is amazing. [Both wins] meant tremendous things for different reasons, but this is really, really important to me."
